Our Hospital with World Class Infrastructure with a Multidisciplinary Care Team

The IRCU has many beds. Members of our multidisciplinary team work together to apply their expertise in treating the variety of conditions seen in our unit. The team includes:

  • Physicians who specialize in pulmonology and critical care medicine
  • Nurse practitioners with expertise in caring for patients with special respiratory needs
  • Pulmonary fellows
  • Nurses
  • Case managers
  • Respiratory, physical and occupational therapists
  • Speech language pathologists
  • Pharmacists
  • Nutritionists
  • Social workers
  • Unit maintenance staff

The IRCU is administered jointly by the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine of the Department of Medicine.

What to Expect

The core of your care team consists of an attending physician, nurse practitioner, pulmonary fellow and respiratory therapist. The team meets daily to examine you, review your progress and discuss your plan for the day and long-term goals.

Upon your request, your care team can arrange a meeting with you and your family. In addition, the nurse practitioner serves as a "point person" to communicate with you on a regular basis. Depending on your particular situation, your stay in the IRCU may last anywhere from days to months.

Respiratory Care Treatments

Our respiratory therapists provide a variety of inpatient treatments:

Oxygen therapy: For people not getting enough oxygen, oxygen therapy – through a facemask or tube inserted in the nostrils – can be administered either in the hospital or at home. A variety of devices are available for use at home depending on your level of mobility. Your doctor will select one that’s right for you.

Inhaled medication therapy: Inhaled drugs reach the airways quickly and directly, such as bronchodialtors to open the airways, antifungal medications and antibiotics. They can also be used for surgical patients on a ventilator, who cannot take medications on their own.

Lung volume expansion therapy: For patients who need to expand their lungs or to keep them clear after surgery, using techniques such as incentive spirometer (a device which measures inhaled air) or CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure involves wearing a mask on the face to blow pressurized air into the airway to keep it from collapsing).
